Poverty and need are year round issues for many in our area, but the winter months and holidays make that reality a little more stark. There are so many ways to give back in Fairfax County and make a difference in our local communities! We’ve compiled a list of a few local organizations and how to help them help the vulnerable during the holidays.
ACCA (Annandale) – Founded in 1967, the Annandale Christian Coalition for Action is now a collection of 26 churches that work together to provide assistance to those in need. Their annual outerwear clothing drive will occur starting the week after Thanksgiving. Coats will be distributed to day laborers, homeless at the Baileys Shelter, and the Safe Haven Day Homeless Center. Children’s outerwear will be given to the children at the ACCA Child Development Center. For more information, or if anyone is looking for volunteer hours contact the Di Spiritos at 703/256-9513 and they will try to connect you with appropriate volunteer opportunities. ACCA also has a furniture ministry, food pantry, meals on wheels program, and medical transportation program.
Britepaths (Fairfax County) – Founded in 1984, Britepaths serves low-income working families through emergency assistance, financial literacy and one-on-one mentoring. Volunteer opportunities exist year round, and currently their Holiday Program allows you to Sponsor a Family for Thanksgiving Dinner and/or December Holiday Dinner/Gifts. Contact them directly at email@example.com or 703.273.8829
